The village of Zamin Samathur is home to the Vanavarayar clan. Believed to have established their base here several hundred years ago, the Samathur Vanavarayars were revered initially as the polygars before taking on the role of Zamindars. The Vanavarayar’s have ruled from Samathur for generations for almost 700 years.
To picture the village of Samathur, one of the cleanest villages in the region, one would have to visualize narrow roads, both paved and mud lined, with rows of clustered houses on either side.
The village is also home to a vibrant community of farmers, handloom weavers, performing artists, and craftsmen who excel in traditional arts and techniques. As you walk in the village, you’ll find new life bubble in the most unexpected corners.
The winding streets will lead you through robin blue-walled alleys which will open up into village squares and junctions where communal taps are located. The cleanliness and the homogeneity maintained in the few distinct architectural characters of the houses and shops will remind you of a timeless reality that is lost even in modern India.
