Earthen Architecture Workshop
The traditional architecture techniques and the prized heritage structures, that form part of the cultural identity of the Pollachi region, have not just succumbed to modernisation and reckless developmental projects but have lost a great many vernacular heritage and earthen architecture techniques without ever being recorded or even recognised.
Modern architecture and characterless, concrete structures are claiming every other village around the region its victim, and the region is in the cusp of becoming a hollow relic of the past.
With a diverse history of earthen architecture with various earth techniques, including cob, adobe, rammed earth, laterite block and wattle & daub, India’s rich constructive culture has dramatically declined over the last 50 years, replaced by a mono-culture of country-fired brick and concrete construction materials.
Recognizing the lack of dedicated courses on vernacular techniques and aiming to restore the lost harmony with Earth, we at The Papyrus Itineraries, collaborated with passionate, experienced architects at Bhutha to offer hands-on, short-term workshops that focuses on Earthen Architecture concepts and techniques.
Over a period of 3 days, while staying at Iyal Farms in the foothills of Sethumadai, participants are also given a chance to draw closer to Nature and interact with the pristine natural environment while making new friends, cherishing traditional meals, venturing out on nature walks looking for birds and truly get involved in the countryside life of Pollachi, that one might never get to see otherwise.
EARTHEN ARCHITECTURE
A ubiquitous model of construction, Earthen architecture techniques involve building structures using natural materials such as soil, lime, wood, stones, etc., while retaining its purity and in a sustainable manner, not altering the balance of the ecosystem.
Ever since the onset of the creation of homes, Earth has been the most largely employed primary material for the construction of buildings.
