Jaggery Tour
This tour will educate and inform you about the traditional process of making jaggery out of the freshly cultivated sap from the two Palm species growing in the region – The Coconut Palm and the Asian Palmyra Palm.
The tour begins with a visit to the coconut farms and palm fields where you can see the tree climbers from the native village in action. The tour takes place in a rural setting that will offer plenty of distractions in the form of cute country goats, munching cows, tiled roofed houses, aesthetically formed bough of dried palm fruits, etc.,
Later, you will meet, interact and glean valuable insights from farmers and craftsmen who also manufacture and market a variety of value-added products with jaggery as the main ingredient.
Later, you will go on to witness the actual process where Neera (sap from Coconut) and padhaneer (sap from Palmyra) are organically and manually processed into thennang karupatti (coconut jaggery) and panang karupatti (palmyra jaggery).
Towards the end of the process, when the sap has become glossy honey, it is left to cool down in the mold. You can then proceed to buy thaen paagu, a delicious caramelized form of jaggery that will strum your palates like supple fingers on a piano. The tour will also give you an opportunity to taste freshly tapped palm nectar (both neera and padhaneer).
